The Abrilongo dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Abrilongo ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Portalegre district . It dams the Abrilongo , a right (northern) tributary of the Guadiana , to a reservoir. The small town of Campo Maior is about eight kilometers southeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam started in 1993. The construction was completed in 2000. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by the DGADR and operated by the Associação de Beneficiários do Xévora .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a height of 29 m above the foundation level (27 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 254.7 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 1,063 m and its width 8 m. The volume of the dam is 494,900 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 5 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 420 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 619 (or 610) m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 252 m (maximum 253.7 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.95 km² and holds 19.9 million m³ of water - of which 18.9 million m³ can be used. The minimum storage target is 241.2 m.
