The Alvito dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Alvito or Barragem de Albergaria dos Fusos ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . It dams the Odivelas , a right (eastern) tributary of the Sado to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem do Alvito ). The eponymous town of Alvito is located about five kilometers southwest of the dam, while the town of Viana do Alentejo is about seven kilometers northwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1970. The construction was completed in 1977. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Municípios de Cuba, Vidigueira e Alvito .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a height of 48.5 m above the foundation level (44 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 201.6 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 1,105 m and its width 10 m. The volume of the dam is 2.285 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 46 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 56 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 1,300 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 197.5 m (maximum 198.85 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 14.8 km² and holds 132.5 million m³ of water - 130 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum congestion destination is 172 m.
