The Azibo dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Azibo ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Bragança district . It dams the Azibo , a right (northern) tributary of the Sabor to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem do Azibo ). The dam and the reservoir are located in a protected area (port. Paisagem Protegida da Albufeira do Azibo ). The town of Macedo de Cavaleiros is about five kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1977. The construction was completed in 1982. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by INAG .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a clay core. The height is 56 m above the foundation level (52 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 606 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 551 m and its width 10 m. The volume of the dam is 1.561 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 45.6 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 170 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 350 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 602 m (maximum 603.65 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 4.1 km² and holds 54.47 million m³ of water - of which 46.67 million m³ can be used. The minimum storage target is 575 m.
