The Caia dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Caia ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Portalegre district . It dams the Caia , a right (northern) tributary of the Guadiana , to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem do Caia ). The municipality of Santa Eulália is about six kilometers west of the dam, the small town of Campo Maior is about five kilometers east.

The project to build the dam began in 1958. The construction was completed in 1967. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Beneficiários do Caia .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a dam on the left and a concrete pillar dam on the right. The height of the structure is 52 m above the foundation level (45.2 m above the river bed). The crown of the structure is at a height of 235.2 m above sea level . The length of the structure crown is 949 m (dam 489 m, dam 460 m) and its width 11 m. The volume of the dam is 171,700 m³, the volume of the dam is 181,700 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 59 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 430 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 1,080 m³ / s; the probability of the occurrence of this event was determined to be once in 42 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 233.5 m (maximum 233.9 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 19.7 km² and holds 203 million m³ of water - 192.3 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum storage target is 212.22 m.
