The Campilhas dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Campilhas ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Setúbal district . It dams the Campilhas , a left (western) tributary of the Sado to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Campilhas ). The small town of Cercal do Alentejo is about five kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1941. The construction was completed in 1954. In addition to the drinking water supply, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários de Campilhas e Alto Sado .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 35 m above the foundation level (28 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 111.5 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 711 m and its width 8 m. The volume of the dam is 680,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 114 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 124 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 722 m³ / s.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 108 m (maximum 109.15 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 3.33 km² and holds 27.156 million m³ of water - of which 26.156 million m³ can be used. The minimum storage target is 92.53 m.
power plant
There is a small hydroelectric plant on the right side of the dam . The average annual production is 0.54 million kWh .
