The Catapereiro Dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Catapereiro ) is located in the Northern Portugal region in the Guarda district . It dams the Teja , a left (southern) tributary of the Douro, to a reservoir. The municipality of Freixo de Numão is located about three kilometers southeast of the dam.

The project to build the dam began in 1992. The construction was completed in 1999. The dam is used to generate electricity.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a gravity dam with a height of 37.5 m above the foundation level (33.5 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 430.1 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 134.4 m.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 15.54 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 424 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 248.08 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 427.5 m (maximum 429.57 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.435 km² and holds 4.0853 million m³ of water - of which 4 million m³ can be used.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 4  MW , the Catapereiro power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal. Two horizontal shaft Pelton turbines are installed.
