The Cerro do Lobo dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Cerro do Lobo ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . They dam the Barranco das Lages . The copper mine Neves-Corvo (port. Mina de Neves-Corvo ) is located about 2 km northwest of the dam, the small town of Castro Verde is about 15 km northwest.

The project to build the dam started in 1993. The construction was completed in 1993. The dam serves as a settling basin for the clarification of wastewater from the processing of the ores of the Neves-Corvo mine (see also Tailings ). It was owned by the Sociedade Mineira de Neves Corvo, SA (Somincor) until 2004 and has been part of Lundin Mining since then .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 36.5 m above the foundation level (36 m above the river bed). The top of the dam lies at a height of 252 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 1,010 m and its width 8 m. The volume of the dam is 873,000 m³.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 0.69 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 8.42 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 15.85 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 10,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 250.5 m (maximum 250.84 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.5 km² and holds 15.5 million m³ of water.
