The Covão do Ferro dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Covão do Ferro ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Castelo Branco district . It dams the Alforfa to a reservoir. The city of Covilhã is about six kilometers southeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1935. The construction was completed in 1956. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by Hidroeléctrica da Ribeira de Alforfa, SA .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of masonry with a height of 32.5 m above the foundation level (30 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 1,575.7 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 400 m and its width 3 m. The volume of the dam is 111,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 30 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 1,573.4 m (maximum 1,575.7 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.065 km² and holds 1.1 million m³ of water - of which 0.87 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 1,545 m.
power plant
A Pelton turbine with a maximum output of 1.2 MW is installed. The average annual production is 2.4 million kWh .
The power plant is owned and operated by Hidroeléctrica da Ribeira de Alforfa, SA (HRA).
