The Enxoé dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Enxoé ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . It dams the Enxoé , a left (eastern) tributary of the Guadiana, to a reservoir. The town of Serpa is about ten kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1995. The construction was completed in 1998. The dam is used to supply drinking water. It is owned by the municipal authorities ( Câmara Municipal ) of Serpa and Mértola .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 23 m above the foundation level (20.5 m above the river bed). The dam is located at an altitude of 179 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 415 m and its width 4 m. The volume of the dam is 240,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 5.3 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 33.4 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 180 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 175 m (maximum 177.1 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.05 km² and holds 10.4 million m³ of water - of which 9.5 million m³ can be used. The minimum storage target is 160.75 m.
