The Euba dam is located in Euba , an eastern district of Chemnitz in the Free State of Saxony . The dam was built from 1911 to 1914 to supply water to the steam locomotives in the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf marshalling yard . The wall consists of the stones that were extracted from the neighboring quarry, later known as the Eibsee , and transported to the reservoir by a field railway .
The listed protection dam of the dam Euba is a curved gravity dam from rubble masonry after the intze principle . The dammed body of water is the dam stream in the Freiberger Mulde river basin .
The dam is no longer used today and is only slightly dammed. Swimming, fishing, recreational sports, etc. in and around the reservoir is prohibited, but it is practiced "wildly". There are bolts on the back wall so that it can be used for sport climbing.
The association "Rettet die Talsperre Euba! EV", founded in 2008, has set itself the goal of saving the Euba Dam, which has been neglected for a long time, from impending deterioration and making it available again as a recreational facility for the residents of Euba, the city of Chemnitz and the surrounding communities deliver.
In summer 2011, the property on which the dam is located was advertised for sale by the city of Chemnitz. At the end of 2012, the city reached an agreement with the investor DC-Entertainment, who already operates the natural swimming pool in Niederwiesa and is co-organizer of the Heavy 24 MTB , on a purchase price of 18,500 euros.
Before the wall has been completely renovated, no water may be dammed up in the Euba dam. During the heavy rainfall of the HQ 100 flood in June 2013 , the dam was flooded to the overflow. A quick lowering of the dam was not possible because the bottom outlet could not be opened even after several dives by the THW . In order to lower the water level by twelve meters, three above-ground drains were laid. This sank the level by two centimeters per hour; it would have taken three to five days to lower it via the basic outlet.
