The Ghrib Dam ( Arabic سد غريب) Is located in Algeria in the commune of Oued Chorfa , province Ain Defla . It dams the Cheliff to a reservoir. The city of Médéa is located approx. 20 km northeast of the dam.
The dam was built from 1927 to 1941. The reservoir was dammed in 1939. Until 1947, further work was carried out on the dam. It is used for irrigation , drinking water supply and electricity generation .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 105 (or 65) m and a crown length of 270 m. The volume of the structure is 700,000 m³. The water side of the dam is sealed with concrete and bitumen.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 100 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 427.5 m (maximum 432.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 12 km² and holds 280 million m³ of water. In 2004 the storage capacity was 115.3 million m³. The annual inflow into the reservoir is around 148.5 million m³. In 1995 48% of the reservoir was silted up.
power plant
The Ghrib power plant has an installed capacity of 7 MW . The machine house is at the foot of the dam.
