John Stutz , actually Jean Stutz , (born January 14, 1933 in Rorschach ) is a Swiss artist. His works include works made of polyurethane , steel sculptures and installations. As a live performer, he made a name for himself in 2011 with his solidarity campaign for the major Swiss banks. Stutz lives and works in Rorschach and in Pawling , New York .

Career

Before working as an artist, John Stutz was an entrepreneur. From 1970 to 1998, the trained machine fitter and chemical clerk managed the family's own production and trading company for liquid plastics, where he developed the construction of sports fields in particular. Still family-owned today, the Douglas (Isle of Man) -based company continues to operate in this area.

Artistic work

John Stutz is self-taught . His artistic work is varied and above all stands for a unique use of highly specialized industrial materials and process technologies. Inspired by Expressionist works, he regularly created oil paintings in the early 1960s and exhibited them in Zurich at that time. In the 1980s, John Stutz met the Swiss exhibition organizer Harald Szeemann (1933–2005) and received pioneering ideas for his later artistic creation, which was characterized by exclusive high-tech materials, to which he devoted himself exclusively from 1998.

In the 1990s, he first looked for ways to creatively use polyurethane resins (liquid plastics) and subsequently developed a process to cast pictures up to 7 cm thick with different surfaces in several colors. The design and execution of these so-called "cast pictures" are part of the creative process, color mixing and determination of the degree of hardness are controlled by a computer. His second discipline is sculpture. Here Stutz works in particular with steel, which he mills into sculptures up to 30 cm thick, as well as with foamed aluminum, which he designs into two meter high towers and coated with polyurethane.

To date, his work comprises more than 600 works and has been exhibited in museum exhibitions in Eastern Switzerland (Museum im Kornhaus Rorschach) as well as in New York galleries such as the A. Jain Marunouchi Gallery and renowned art fairs such as the 2013 Triennale de Paris. The steel sculptures and cast pictures by John Stutz were given a place of honor in 2011 at the Art Biennale X «Mange» in St. Petersburg, where the main hall was made available to the works and the well-known Butoh master Katsura Kan served as a backdrop for his live performance at the opening of the fair . Well-known purchases can be found in the collection of Zurich Insurance, the World Football Association Fifa, the municipality of Horgen (ZH) or the Unternehmerforum Lilienberg (TG).

Installations and performances

In the present, John Stutz has attracted attention through some live performances. His installation “I love the three giants” attracted greater attention, but also received criticism. In front of the headquarters of the major Swiss banks Credit Suisse, UBS and Zürcher Kantonalbank, he presented a heavy steel sculpture with the inscription “I love UBS”, “I love CS” and "I love KB" and expressed his solidarity with the heavily criticized financial institutions. Equally controversial was the installation “Good luck euro” in front of the main entrance of the Swiss National Bank in 2012, when he placed hundreds of gold nuggets made of polyurethane to congratulate the SNB for buying 500 billion euros to fix the Swiss franc. As a critic of a closed art establishment, he finally demonstrated in the Löwenbräuareal in Zurich in 2013 with the installation “The Curators” against a network of established curators and gallery owners who are increasingly closing themselves off to artists outside their own network. The museum management instructed the police to clear the installation.
