The Hali Dam is located in Wadi Hali in the province of Mecca , Saudi Arabia . It is the third highest dam in Saudi Arabia. The town of Kiyat is approximately 18 km west of the dam.

The dam was built from 2003 to 2009 by the construction company Al-Dakheel . In addition to flood protection, the dam is also used for irrigation and drinking water supply as well as for filling up a groundwater reservoir. It is owned by the Ministry of Water and Electricity (MOWE) and is also operated by MOWE.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 95 m above the foundation level (57 m above the river bed). The length of the building crown is 384 m. The dam wall is 71 m wide at the base and 8 m at the top. The volume of the dam is 690,000 m³.

There are six inspection corridors in the dam that monitor the dam. The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 9,000 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.

Reservoir

When fully blocked , the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 15 km² and holds around 250 million m³ of water; This makes it the second largest reservoir in terms of volume in Saudi Arabia (after the reservoir of the König Fahd Dam ). The catchment area of the wadi up to the dam is 4,843 km².
