List of counties in the province of Hessen-Nassau (1885)
The list of districts in the province of Hessen-Nassau is taken from the official directory from 1885 on the district order for the province of Hessen-Nassau from June 7, 1885 (the original spelling has been retained as far as possible). The Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau consisted of the administrative districts of Kassel and Wiesbaden from 1868 to 1944 ; the high presidium of the province of Hessen-Nassau had its seat in Kassel .
The legal basis for the formation of the district was the laws passed by the victorious Prussia after the German War in 1866 , above all the annexation law for Kurhessen, Nassau and Frankfurt of September 20, 1866. The Prussian annexation of the Electorate of Hesse and the Duchy of Nassau had their districts ( Kurhessen) or offices (Nassau) and the area of the free city of Frankfurt , urban area of Frankfurt and Sachsenhausen including their villages, with only a few territorial changes: those of the Kingdom of Bavaria ( Gersfeld district office , later Gersfeld district and the Orb district court without aura ) and the areas annexed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse ( district of Vöhl , including the enclaves Eimelrod and Höringhausen ) were relatively small ( peace treaty of September 3, 1866 ).
The administrative district of Kassel and the administrative district of Wiesbaden were formed by an ordinance of February 22, 1867 . The instructions from 1817 applied to the course of business in the government presidents' authority. However, the province of Hessen-Nassau was not formed until almost two years later, on December 7, 1868.
In 1885 , for the first time, a district order was issued for the districts in the province of Hessen-Nassau that had belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia since 1866 . As before, the districts were first administrative districts of the state (internal) administration, the new district order guaranteed their status as self-governing bodies , which had existed since 1867 . The provincial order for the province came into force on April 1, 1886 on the basis of the Introductory Act of June 8, 1885.
