history

middle Ages

The municipality used to belong to the domain of the county of Lechsgemünd-Graisbach, which fell to the Wittelsbach family in 1342 . The settlement of the region began in the early Middle Ages by the Franks . Marxheim was first mentioned in a document as "Villa Morauchisheim" in 1238 in a deed of donation in which Count Berchtold von Lechsgemünd bequeathed a Gunnehof to the Kaisheim monastery . The Marxheim Danube Bridge is first mentioned in 1343 when the Count of Lechsgemünd had a customs post built there; but the bridge had existed for a long time. In 1248 Lechsend Castle (Lechsgemünd) , located about one kilometer to the southwest, was attacked by a Regensburg army and burned down completely. The reason for this was the closing of the Danube by the Count. The castle was not rebuilt, instead, moved the family to Count Graisbach to the castle Graisbach over.

Modern times

Since 1505 Marxheim belonged to the Duchy of Neuburg-Sulzbach and its court Graisbach; since 1777 the area was part of the Electorate of Bavaria . The closed court brands Gansheim ( Count Veri della Bosia ) and Schweinspoint ( Barons von Hacke ) were located in today's municipal area, which includes the local court .

In the first half of the 18th century, Marxheim was important as a meeting point for emigrants who traveled to Vienna on the Danube and then moved on to Hungary (see also Swabian trains ).

Towards the end of the Second World War , units of the 45th US Infantry Division advanced across the Danube on April 27, 1945 after a fierce battle. The bridge had previously been blown up by German troops.

After the Second World War

A new town hall, which also houses the community library, was built in 1982 in the center of Marxheim. Originally, the post office was also located there.

Incorporations

During the municipal reform , the municipalities of Burgmannshofen (with Übersfeld), Gansheim, Graisbach (with Lechsend) and Marxheim were merged on July 1, 1972. Neuhausen was added on April 1, 1977. Schweinspoint followed on May 1, 1978.

coat of arms

Former Marxheim coat of arms

Description: "Divided five times by blue and gold with a red panther on top."

The coat of arms of the community of Marxheim corresponds to the earlier coat of arms of the county of Lechsgemünd-Graisbach and was introduced in 1983 as the coat of arms for the entire community. Before that, the old Marxheim coat of arms was included in the municipal seal. Since this coat of arms is not very meaningful for the other districts, the introduction of a new coat of arms was decided in 1982. The municipal council finally decided in favor of the proposal of the General Directorate of the Bavarian State Archives. This justified their proposal as follows:

“The municipality used to belong to the rulership of the County of Lechsgemünd-Graisbach. The coat of arms of the Counts of Lechsgemünd-Graisbach, who died out in the male line in 1342, was therefore used as the basis for the design of the new municipal coat of arms. The six golden or blue colored stripes that characterize the coat of arms simultaneously symbolize the six former parishes that make up today's parish of Marxheim, namely Burgmannshofen, Gansheim, Graisbach, Neuhausen, Schweinspoint and Marxheim. "
