history

Until the church is planted

In the 12th century the local nobility, the Counts of Oettingen , the nobles of Lierheim, the monasteries of Kaisheim and Zimmer and the Lords of Woellwarth owned property in the village. In 1323 the Counts of Oettingen sold their property together with the bailiwick and patronage rights to the Teutonic Order . The coming Ellingen to the Teutonic Order then shared the rulership of the village with the Counts of Oettingen-Wallerstein , who continued to hold sovereignty. Möttingen itself has been a Protestant parish village since the Reformation . The county of Oettingen was part of the Swabian Empire , while the Deutschordensballei Franken was part of the Franconian Empire . Both legal entities of the place were mediatized in 1805/06 . With the Rhine Confederation Act 1806, the place came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . With the community edict of 1818 , today's political community was created.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1975, the previously independent municipalities of Appetshofen, Enkingen and Kleinsorheim were voluntarily incorporated as part of the regional reform . On May 1, 1978, the municipality of Balgheim was added.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the community grew from 2,241 to 2,544 by 303 inhabitants or 13.5%.
