TrueOS (formerly PC-BSD ) is a free operating system , which is based on the Unix derivative FreeBSD and extends it functionally. On the one hand, the extensions are designed for use as a PC with graphical desktop environments . On the other hand, additional functions are also provided for use as a server. The project aims to make BSD easy to use and common usage. The rich functionalities of FreeBSD should also be operable beyond the command line . The project is based at iXsystems .

At the end of August 2016, the project announced that TrueOS is now the central name for the product, and also the project itself. In addition to the original version for use with the PC with the name PC-BSD , a version for use with servers with the name TrueOS was created many years earlier . Although it is the same operating system - the version for operation on servers only dispensed with the graphical user interface compared to the version on the PC - the wrong impression was often given that the operating systems were different. TrueOS is now the uniform name for all versions. The type is indicated by the appropriate addition ( desktop or server ).

The development of TrueOS was stopped in early 2020.

technical features

Lumina desktop environment

From version 10 of PC-BSD, the desktop environment called Lumina , which was specially developed for PC-BSD, is used as standard .

Operation via graphical interfaces

Unlike FreeBSD, TrueOS also offers a graphical installer and software installer. In addition to the Lumina desktop environment, KDE SC 4 , LXDE , Xfce or MATE can also be installed as a supplement or replacement for TrueOS . In addition, there is also a large number of desktop environments that do not offer the usual tools for managing TrueOS directly. The spectrum ranges from awesome to Cinnamon and Gnome 3 to Window Maker .

history

The first version of TrueOS was released in April 2005 as PC-BSD 0.5.

Since version 7.0, which was released on September 16, 2008, TrueOS has followed the same numbering as FreeBSD. The version immediately before 7.0 had the version number 1.5.x. This version was the first version with 64-bit support. Previous versions only supported the 32-bit architecture .

Similar to Debian  GNU / Linux or Ubuntu , each release has a version number as well as its own name from the field of chemistry .

License

TrueOS was originally released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) because TrueOS uses the Qt library and the developers believed that programs using the Qt library were only available under the GPL or the Q Public License (QPL) must be published. However, the GPL contradicts the ideology of the BSD license , as it provides for a strong copyleft in contrast to the BSD license . This means that software published under the GPL must also be published under this license in the event of later processing or further development. This prevents the original product from being collected unfree . Another difference of the BSD license is that a programmer who changes and distributes a program published under a BSD license is not obliged to publish the source code of his changed program. Because most of the free BSD derivatives were only published under the BSD license and it is not true that programs that use the Qt library have to be published under the GPL or QPL, the project decided to use the appeared in June 2005 to release their product under the modified BSD license.

distribution

On October 10, 2006, the server hardware provider iXsystems announced the acquisition of PC-BSD. This purchase of PC-BSD results in the financial and expert support of the PC-BSD project by iXsystems. In 2007 iXsystems entered into a distribution agreement with Fry's Electronics ; PC-BSD 1.4 (“Da Vinci” edition) was then available for purchase in Fry's Electronics branches around the world. In January 2008 iXsystems entered into a similar contract with Micro Center .

PC-BSD® doesn't reflect server or embedded well. TrueOS® Desktop / Server / Embedded can be real products, avoids some of the alphabet soup, and gives us a more catchy name. "
