GhostBSD uses the MATE environment.
development
Eric Turgeon and Nahuel Sanchez met in 2010 in the official forum of FreeBSD together and decided there together, a FreeBSD distribution to create what the Gnome puts desktop.
The first version 1.0 was released on March 12, 2010 and could only be used as a live CD / DVD. It was based on FreeBSD 8 and GNOME 2.28. The version was put online under the motto “GhostBSD go green”, as the developers tried to trim the operating system to a lower power consumption.
The second version 1.5 was made available for download on July 29, 2010 and is based on FreeBSD 8.1 and GNOME 2.30. Compiz is built in as well as Linux binary compatibility. GhostBSD can now be installed with the help of pc-sysinstall, but can still be used as a live CD / DVD.
For version 2.0, which was released in March 2011, a graphical installation program was integrated. Version 2.5 was released on January 24th, 2012 and is based on FreeBSD 9.0.
With version 11.1 the support for x86 systems (32 bit) was dropped.
As of version 18.10, GhostBSD is based on TrueOS , another Unix derivative , which is also based on FreeBSD and extends it functionally.
With version GhostBSD 20.03, the developers started to host their own repository.
