The Monte da Rocha dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Monte da Rocha ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . It dams the Sado to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem do Monte da Rocha ). The small town of Castro Verde is about ten kilometers southeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1965. The construction was completed in 1972. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários de Campilhas e Alto Sado .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a clay core. The height is 55 m above the foundation level (51 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 141.4 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 2000 m and its width 10 m. The volume of the dam is 1.81 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 80 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 260 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 1500 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 137 m (maximum 138.45 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 11 km² and holds 104.5 million m³ of water - 99.5 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum stowage destination is 113.5 m.
