The Zambujo dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Zambujo ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Portalegre district . It dams the Ribeira do Zambujo to a reservoir. The small town of Alter do Chão is about five kilometers northeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1989. The construction was completed in 1994. The dam is used to supply drinking water. It is owned by the district administration of Alter do Chão, the CM Alter do Chão .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a height of 24 m above the foundation level (12 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 199 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 209.5 m and its width 4 m. The volume of the dam is 73,200 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 1.75 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 13.25 m³ / s via the flood discharge.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 197.2 m (maximum 197.92 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.37 km² and holds 1.25 million m³ of water - of which 1.229 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion destination is 190 m.
