Tamil Progressive Alliance

The Tamil Progressive Alliance ( TPA , Tamil தமிழ் முற்போக்கு கூட்டணி ; " Tamil Progressive Alliance ") is an alliance of parties founded in Sri Lanka in 2015 .

history

The alliance was founded in the run-up to the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka in 2015 at a delegates' meeting in the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo on June 3, 2015. The three founding parties were the Democratic People's Front (DPF) headed by Mano Ganesan, the National Union of Workers (NUW) under P. Thigambaram and the Up-Country People's Front (UCPF) under V. Radhakrishnan. All three parties belong to the socialist, left-wing political spectrum. Mano Ganesan was elected spokesman and leader of the alliance.

The alliance sought the vote of the Tamils in central and southern Sri Lanka, the " Indian " or " Upcountry Tamils " ( upcountry Tamils ), descended from plantation workers who came to Sri Lanka during the British colonial period , in the 2015 general election came. In the northern and eastern provinces , where the " Sri Lankan Tamils " have lived since ancient times , the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) campaigned for votes. However, the TNA only ran for candidates in these two provinces.

The mountainous Tamils make up approximately 4.1% of Sri Lanka's population (840,000 people) according to the 2012 census. The TPA assumes much higher numbers (1.5 million).

The largest party of the mountainous Tamils, the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) was not included in the TPA. In support of this, TPA spokesmen said that the CWC was too apolitical and more of a union than a party. The TPA wants to fight against it not only for labor and collective bargaining rights of Tamil workers, but also for civil rights. The TPA is politically linked to the UNP- led government under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe , which has been in office since January 2015 (several TPA politicians are ministers in the government). The CWC, on the other hand, is a member of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) coalition. On 11/12 In July 2015, the leaders of the TPA announced that they would join the newly formed UNP-led coalition of parties, the United National Front for Good Governance .
