Thomas Schmidinger (born August 25, 1974 in Feldkirch ) is an Austrian political scientist and social and cultural anthropologist with a focus on Kurdistan , Jihadism , the Middle East and international politics .

Life

Schmidinger was born in Feldkirch in 1974 , but also spent a lot of time with his father's family in Fusch an der Glocknerstrasse . He attended elementary and secondary school in Feldkirch and was at the HTL Rankweil for communications technology from 1988 to 1990, from which he switched to the technical college for communications technology at the HTL Rankweil in 1990. Schmidinger was active in various left, ecological and anti-fascist groups since he was fifteen, founded the youth initiative Pangea in Vorarlberg and the regional organization of green alternative youth .

From 1994 to 1996 he was also the first and only federal coordinator of the Green Alternative Youth , but resigned in autumn 1996 and was only active in non-party left-wing projects afterwards. As part of his anti-racist activities, he was banned from parliament for one year after the death of Marcus Omofuma with leaflets during the speech of the then Interior Minister Karl Schlögl in parliament.

Schmidinger appeared as a youngster in Vorarlberg as a dialect songwriter, was involved in several pirate radio stations and published poems and short stories.

In 1995 the university entrance examination took place. From 1995 to 2003 he studied political science and social and cultural anthropology at the University of Vienna and did his doctorate in political science with Eva Kreisky . He has been a lecturer at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna since 2004, since 2011 as a lecturer at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences in the Master's for Intercultural Social Work and since 2016 at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences , also in the MA Social Work. Furthermore, he repeatedly holds individual courses at universities of teacher education, v. a. in training.

During his studies Schmidinger u. a. as coordinating editor of the magazine Context XXI, coordinator of the research of the exhibition Gastarbajteri in the Wien Museum and in the refugee and integration area of Caritas Austria .

Schmidinger's study and research visits took him to Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Turkey, Israel, the Palestinian autonomous regions, Iraq and Iran. In 2010/2011 he received a Research Fellowship at the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota . In 2012 a Research Fellowship at the University of Pristina with the MOEL-Plus funding program of the Austrian Research Association. Schmidinger appears again and again at various international conferences and has repeatedly been a guest speaker in the EU Parliament on the topics of jihadism and Kurdistan. a. in the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI). In February 2016 he was a guest lecturer at the traditional Mülkiye of the University of Ankara.

He is also active in refugee care and integration work and in 2014 co-founded the “Network Social Cohesion” for the deradicalization of jihadist youth and young adults and prevention work, which in autumn 2015 received the European Citizens' Prize from the EU Parliament. However, after falling out between the chairman, Moussa al-Hassan Diaw , and part of the board and advisory board, the association was dissolved in January 2016. Since then, Schmidinger has no longer been a consultant, but only active scientifically and in the area of ​​further training on the subject of jihadism . He is a member of the Expert Forum on Prevention, Deradicalization and Culture of Democracy of the City of Vienna and continues to be a speaker on the topic of adult education, in the training of social workers, police officers, probation officers and educators. From February 2016 to December 2017, Schmidinger was a research fellow at the Institute for Legal and Criminal Sociology, where he worked on a study on jihadists in custody and a study on young IS sympathizers.

Schmidinger has also produced smaller documentaries and is occasionally present in the media in public debates in Austria. He took part in television discussions on ORF, Puls 4 and Servus TV, but also took part in debates with migrant and Muslim associations.

In July 2016 Schmidinger opened an exhibition with his photos about Rojava in the European Parliament. Although different Kurdish actors were on display, some of them competing with one another, the exhibition was condemned by the Turkish mass media as “terrorist propaganda”. The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and İbrahim Kalın , Erdogan's foreign policy advisor, officially protested against the exhibition, as it was “propaganda for a terrorist group that attacks Turkish citizens daily” under the umbrella of the EU Parliament the exhibition was finally shown in the premises of the parliamentary club of the SPÖ in the parliament in Vienna.

In September 2019, despite a valid visa and invitations from three American universities, Schmidinger was prevented by the Department of Homeland Security from boarding a plane to the USA at the airport in Amsterdam, where he should have presented the English translation of his book about Afrin in bookshops and universities . Protested against this procedure u. a. also the American PEN club.

Research priorities

Schmidinger's research focuses on the Middle East , political Islam , jihadism , Iraq , Sudan , anti-Semitism , migration , state collapse , Kurdistan , international politics , state and religion.

Memberships

Schmidinger is a board member of the aid organization League for Emancipatory Development Cooperation LeEZA, which is active in the Middle East. He is co-founder and general secretary of the Austrian Society for the Promotion of Kurdology / European Center for Kurdish Studies. He is a member of the Austrian Society for Political Science and the Sudan Studies Association. He was a board member of the IG Lectors and Freelance Scientists, the Austrian-Iraqi Friendship Association Iraquna, the Society for Critical Antisemitism Research, a member of the Senate of the University of Vienna (Mittelbau) and from 2012 to 2015 a member of the Works Council for Scientific Staff at the University of Vienna.
