The Tanimbarschleiereule ( Tyto sororcula ), also Moluccas Barn Owl or short Molukkeneule called, is a kind from the kind of barn owls that only the Tanimbarinseln Yamdena and Larat and on Buru occurs. It is an extremely rare species that has not yet been observed in the wild. The description of the species is based on only three bellows , two of which were collected on Tanimbar and one on Buru.

features

The Tanimbar Barn Owl reaches a body length of 29 to 31 centimeters. The top of the body is gray-brown and is speckled with black-edged white spots. The face veil is pale reddish brown with a thin, brown border. The wings and tail feathers are gray to reddish brown with dark transverse bands.

The owl's way of life is unexplored but is believed to be similar to species of the same genus. It is believed that the habitat of the Tanimbar Barn Owl are the primary forests of the lowlands of the two islands. The preservation of the forests is considered essential for the preservation of the species.

voice

The owl makes three to four rapid screeching tones or three to four elongated, higher screeching tones.

Subspecies

The nominate form T. s. sororcula lives on Yamdena and Larat in the Tanimbar Archipelago. The subspecies T. s. cayelii is larger and more yellow-brown in color. She lives in Buru and maybe Seram too . Possibly it is a separate species, especially since the taxonomic position of the Tanimbar veil owl is uncertain.
