Tanjung (Lombok)

Tanjung is a small town on the Indonesian island of Lombok . The place name means "headland" or "cape".

Tanjung is located on the north coast of the island of Lombok in the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Barat and is the administrative seat of the administrative district (Kabupaten) Lombok Utara . The port of Bangsal, from which ferries leave for the Gili Islands , which are popular with tourists , is 10 km to the west. The 3726 m high Rinjani volcano rises southeast of the city .

Tanjung is located on the well-developed coastal road and is the center of an agriculturally intensively used area, in which mainly rice and tobacco are grown. A special cattle market is held every Sunday. Tourism is of no importance to the city itself, but two high-end hotel complexes have been built a few kilometers west of it.

Attractions

About 800 Buddhists live in Tanjung and the surrounding area, and they represent a tiny minority on the Islamic island of Lombok. In the city center, the Buddhist temple Vihara Dhamma is worth seeing. It was severely damaged in an earthquake in 2006 and is currently being rebuilt. A few kilometers southeast of Tanjung, another Buddhist temple was built, Suttha Dhamma Lenek .

Surroundings

On the small Sira peninsula a few kilometers west of Tanjung, the Hindu temple Pura Medana is worth visiting. It is located right by the sea and is visited daily by believers who offer flowers and fruits here.

In the area around Tanjung, several waterfalls are the goal of hiking, e.g. B. the Air Terjung Gangga and the 30 m high Air Terjun Tiu Pupas .

About 20 km east of Tanjung, on the northern slope of the Rinjani, is the village of Bayan, which is popular because of the Masjid Bayan Kuno Beleq mosque . The mosque was built in 1634 and is considered the oldest on the entire island.
