The Japanese Farmhouse Open Air Museum ( Japanese 日本 民家 集 落 博物館 , Nihon Minka Shūraku Hakubutsukan ) in Toyonaka , Osaka Prefecture preserves old farmhouses , buildings and other things from different regions of Japan.

Overview

The open-air museum with a size of 36,000 m² was opened in 1956 as the first museum of its kind in Japan. It is located on the edge of the Hattori Park ( 服 部 緑地 公園 , Hattori Ryokuchi Kōen ), which in a sense continues on the site with wild plums, cherries and bamboo. Seven farmhouses and other village buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries that were in use until the 1950s were moved here. The construction of the open-air museum was essentially completed in 1964. A more recent addition is the tea house.
