Tanomura Chikuden ( Japanese 田 能 村 竹田 , July 14, 1777 - October 20, 1835 ), real first name: Kōken (孝 憲), other artist names: Ransui (藍 水), Kyōkaku (狂客), was a painter from the Nanga school in the late Edo period .

life and work

Tanomura came from a family that had provided doctors for the Nakagawa clan in the city of Taketa in Bungo Province for generations . After his father's death, he took over his position, but was urged by his prince to become a Confucian scholar. At the age of 21 he became a teacher at the school of the clan, the Yūgakukan (由 学 館). The head of the school was Karahashi Kunzan (唐橋君 山), who edited the “History of the Province of Bungo” (豊 後 国史, Bungo kokushi) at the command of the prince. Tanomura toured the entire province with Karahashi for three years to collect material for the historical work. Nevertheless, Tanomura managed to travel to Edo in between and meet Tani Buncho .

In 1811 there was an uprising among the peasants who fought for improved living conditions. Tanomura sympathized with them and made suggestions for improvement. The following year the peasants rebelled again, and Tanomura submitted proposals a second time. Nothing worked, so he resigned from his post in 1813 and began a life as a scholar and calligrapher.

Tanomura made contact with Rai Sanyō , Uragami Gyokudō , to Gyokudō's son, Shunkin, to Shinozaki Kochiku (篠 崎 小竹; 1781-1851) and others. During his travels he collected works of art and painted masterpieces such as the album "But once again more joys" (亦復 一 楽 帳, Ekifuku ichiraku-chō) in the Nara National Museum and "Sketches from a window of a boat" (船 窓 小 戯 帖, Sensō shōgi-chō).

Tanomuras follows the style of the Nanga direction in his landscapes, mostly in portrait format. He also designed scrolls and albums with birds and flowers. In addition to his painting, Tanomura also wrote art books on the Nanga school such as "Sanchūjin jōzetsu" ( 山 中人 饒舌 ) and "Chikuden sōshiyū garoku" (竹田 荘 師 友 画 録), which contain biographical notes and anecdotes about his friends.
