Nils Rosén von Rosenstein (born February 1, 1706 in Sexdrega , Svenljunga municipality , † July 16, 1773 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish court doctor, professor of medicine, botany and anatomy and rector of Uppsala University . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " N.Rosén ".

biography

Rosén von Rosenstein was born as the son of Vicar Erik Rosenius and Anna Wekander in the historic province of Västergötland . After attending grammar school in Gothenburg , he began studying at Lund University at the age of 14 .

After moving to Uppsala University , he published a medical treatise in 1728 and was appointed deputy to Olof Rudbeck the Younger . In the later years the budding physician traveled to Germany and France, among other places, and received his doctorate in medicine in 1730 with his doctoral thesis Att skriva fallbeskrivningar (How to write case studies ). From 1731 to 1740 he took over Rudbeck's professorship in Uppsala, where he exchanged medicine for anatomy and botany . In 1735 he was appointed personal physician to King Friedrich and in 1739 a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , which was founded in the same year. In 1742 he exchanged the professorship in botany with Carl von Linné , who had previously held a professorship in anatomy and practical medicine. In 1747 he was the rector of the university. In 1757 he was made a Knight of the North Star Order .

Act

Rosén conducted research in the field of variolation against the spreading smallpox disease and is considered the father of Swedish pediatrics with the publication of the textbook Underrättelser om barnsjukdomar och deras botemedel (Communications on childhood diseases and their remedies) in 1764 . In addition to the theory of diseases, his work contained many practical observations on child care and hygiene and quickly spread throughout Europe.
