Tansel Akzeybek (* 1978 in Berlin ) is a German tenor of Turkish descent.

Life

Tansel Akzeybek was born in Berlin. When he was five years old, he and his family returned to their hometown of Izmir . Akzeybek did not speak Turkish at the time and therefore had to practice with his grandmother in order to attend school there. Up to the age of 14 Akzeybek played in the youth team of the Altay İzmir club . After his parents recognized his talent as a singer, Akzeybek took singing lessons at a private music school, and his father also gave him a keyboard. At the age of 15 Akzeybek became a wedding singer. Akzeybek passed the entrance examination at the state Dokuz Eylül Conservatory of Izmir with the maximum number of points and began to study singing there. During this time Akzeybek also appeared in the army music corps on state visits. At 18 he attended an opera performance for the first time with Jules Massenets Werther . At 19, Akzeybek became a member of the opera choir and in 1998 was the first prisoner to sing his first solo in Beethoven's Fidelio . After graduating, Akzeybek was engaged at the Izmir Opera. As he saw little further development opportunities for himself in his home country, Akzeybek said, because there was no independent opera tradition there, he followed the advice of a horn player friend who occasionally worked with the Berlin Philharmonic and moved from Izmir to Lübeck in 2004, although he according to his own statements, spoke no more German. In Germany, Akzeybek studied another three semesters at the Lübeck University of Music with Anke Eggers and, after completing his diploma, in the master classes with Lia Lantieri , Katia Ricciarelli and René Kollo . In 2009 he received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Association in Bayreuth. Engagements followed in Dortmund , Bonn , Salzburg and finally Berlin, where he sang Tamino in the Magic Flute and Tony in West Side Story as a member of the Komische Oper ensemble .

Akzeybek has had German citizenship since 2013. From 2014 Akzeybek returned to Izmir for a short time, where he sang the title role in the 2015 world premiere of a Harry Potter opera staged by Murat Göksu at the Mozart Academy. On July 25, 2015 Akzeybek opened the Bayreuth Festival as the first singer of Turkish origin in his role as a young sailor in Tristan und Isolde in the new production by Katharina Wagner .

Akzeybek lives in Berlin with his wife, a pianist.
