Tarek Galal Schawki (also Tarek Shawki ; Arabic طارق جلال شوقي, DMG Ṭāriq Ǧalāl Šauqī ; born June 12, 1957 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian politician. He has been Minister of Education of Egypt since February 2017 . In 2018 he presented the Education 2.0 concept at the Frankfurt Book Fair .

Life

Schawki studied at the Universities of Cairo and Brown in Providence , Rhode Island , USA. He earned Master of Science degrees in Applied Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering , where he also received his PhD. He then spent 13 years as a professor and scientist in theoretical and applied mechanics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .

From 1999 to 2005 Schawki went to the UNESCO office in Cairo (UCO = UNESCO Cairo Office) as a regional advisor for communication and information , before becoming head of the “ICTs in Education, Science and Culture” department within the “Information Society Division” until 2008. (Information Society Department) at UNESCO in Paris. From June 2008 to August 2012 he headed the UNESCO regional science office in the Arab states.

In September 2012, Schawki was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Since February 2017 he is education minister in the cabinets of Ismail and Madbuli .
