The Monastery of the Holy Translators ( Armenian Սուրբ Թարգմանչաց վանք Surb Targmantschaz Wank , Azerbaijani Quşçu məbədi "Temple of Gushdschu") is an Armenian monastery founded in the 4th century . It is located four kilometers north of Daschkäsän in what is now Azerbaijan .

The monastery is believed to have been founded by Saints Mesrop Mashtots and Sahak Partev . In 411 they translated the Bible from Syriac here .

history

The Monastery of the Holy Translators (Surb Targmantschaz) got this name because Mesrop Mashtots and Sahak Partew translated the Holy Bible from Syriac within its walls . The Targmantschaz Monastery in what is now Azerbaijan should not be confused with the complex in the center of the Armenian village of Aygeschat.

Targmantschaz Monastery was founded at the end of the 4th century or the beginning of the 5th century. The monastery was rebuilt in 989 and 1845. The monastery was expanded during the reign of Bishop Gabriel Harutunjan. During his time as bishop, many people from the nearby villages helped the monastery. The monastery flourished again during the reign of Stepanos Baljanz in the 1830s. It is common knowledge that in 1839 the monk Grigor Ter-Hovhannesjanz served as a priest three times here. In 1849 Archimandrite Sargis succeeded the Archimandrite Howhannes.

description

There is a vaulted barn to the northeast of the monastery.

church

The main church of the building complex is dated to 1630. The church consists of a vaulted dome with an apse in the east, with two small rooms in between.

On the west side of the church is the Gawit , a built-on vestibule typical of Armenian monasteries. A two-story tower south of this vestibule, built of engraved and cut stones, leads to the main entrance of the church. The hall is located to the north of the church, which probably served as a place of worship - the sacristy .

The cells

Five meters east of the church there are three cells of the monks , which look to the west. These "cells" are 6 vaulted rooms, each with an entrance and a window that also looks to the west. A dining room extends to the southeast of the cells. From the south to the dining room there is a similar room that most likely served as a kitchen.

The "cells of the monks" were built in the same style as the overall church, built in the shape from 1630. The barn and dining room were added by Archimandrite Stepanos in the 1830s.

Current status

The Targmantschaz monastery is today in an extremely dilapidated condition.

“Currently, the monastery is located in extreme decline, with its cells, a covered stockyard, warehouse are lying in ruins. Nearby buildings are just a pile of stones. "
