Tarn Taran Sahib is a city in the Indian state of Punjab .

The city is the capital of the Tarn Taran district . Tarn Taran Sahib has the status of a Municipal Council. The city is divided into 19 wards .

history

Tarn Taran Sahib was founded by the fifth Sikh guru Arjan Dev (1563-1606). He laid the foundation stone for the Sri Tarn Taran Sahib Temple , which still gives the city great importance among religious Sikhs. Tarn Taran Sahib was part of the Bhangi Sikh dynasty, which was ruled by a powerful Sikh family of the Dhillon clan from 1716 to 1810. The city later fell to the British and was finally added to the newly created Republic of India when India was partitioned in 1947 .

The city was a center of the Sikh uprising in the 1980s and early 1990s. Tarn Taran Sahib was proposed as the capital of Khalistan , the independent Sikh nation proclaimed by separatists.

Since 2006 the city has been the capital of the newly created Tarn Taran district.

Demographics

The city's population is 66,847 according to the 2011 census. Tarn Taran Sahib has a gender ratio of 913 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 79.33% in 2011. Almost 76% of the population are Sikhs , around 23% are Hindus and around 2% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 11.1% of the population.

The main occupation in the region is agriculture and agro-industry, with very few other industries.

Infrastructure

The city is connected to the rest of India through its train station. Tarn Taran Railway Station is on the Amritsar-Khemkaran line

Attractions

Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib, a well-known Sikh shrine, is located in the central part of the city.
