Tarrazú in the province of San José

Tarrazú is a canton in the Costa Rican province of San José with 17,473 inhabitants. The capital is San Marcos . It is an important growing area for coffee , in which top-quality coffees are produced from ideal altitudes. The name Tarrazú comes from the language of the Huetar Indians who originally lived in this area.

Geography and history

The region is located south of the capital San José . It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean , the Central Valley and the Central Mountain Range of Costa Rica.

On August 7, 1868, the two cantons Escazú and Desamparados were redistributed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Costa Rica under Article 2 of Decree XXX (30), so that Puriscal and Tarrazú were created. This was announced by President José María Castro in the National Palace . In 1890 the first city council was founded, made up of citizens of the localities of San Marcos, Santa Maria and San Pablo, as these places belonged to the canton of Tarrazú at that time and later formed the main towns of the cantons of Dota and León. At that time, Costa Rica extended its borders to the Republic of Panama , which was part of Colombia .

The name of the capital of the canton was determined in 1867 during a visit by the dean Domingo Rivas, who was accompanied by the priest Raimundo Mora. This priest came from San Marcos in Guatemala and that's how the place got this name. By decree (No. 146) León Cortés stipulated on August 3, 1938 that San Marcos should function as the capital and administrative seat of the canton of Tarrazú.

Territory division

The canton of Tarrazú is divided into three sub-districts. These are the districts of San Carlos, San Lorenzo and San Marcos.

Spanish settlement

In 1818 José Miguel Cascante Rojas followed an ancient path of the Indians and came to Tarrazú. He was accompanied by his wife Josefa Casilda Cascante Mena and his two sons Jesus and Juan María. They settled in a place known as "Boca de Dota" or "Hato de Dota". The city of San Marcos is now located here. Later, Caraceolo Muñoz, Ramón Zúñiga Barahona, Antolín Umaña and Manuel Barbozaan also settled there. However, the historical documents do not give any information about what occupation they were engaged in. Presumably they grew crops for self-sufficiency or were cattle breeders.

Coffee and tourism

  • The first plants were imported from Cuba 250 years ago. Today there are 100 coffee trees for every resident. The tasty coffee bean is mainly due to the climatic conditions (sunlight, temperature and rainfall), as well as the nutrient-rich volcanic soils.
  • Tarrazú is one of the least touristically developed regions of Costa Rica, although it is easy to get to by bus and has a pleasant climate. In addition to the natural treasures, the area around Los Santos offers typical dances and dishes, handicrafts, coffee growing and coffee tasting as well as hiking, fishing, horse riding excursions, bird watching (for example the Quetzal ) or national park visits for tourists.
