León Cortés Castro

León Luis Cortés Castro (born December 8, 1882 in Alajuela , † March 3, 1946 in Santa Ana ) was President of Costa Rica .

Life

His parents were Fidelina Castro Ruiz and the doctor Dr. Roberto Cortés y Cortés. His father was born in Colombia and studied medicine in the German Reich.

On September 28, 1905, he married Julia Fernández Rodríguez in Alajuela.

León Cortés Castro was a member of the Partido Republicano Nacional .

León Cortés Castro was director of the Archivos Nacionales .

During his tenure there was a banking reform, banana production in the southern Pacific region was subsidized and the ports of Quepos and Golfito were built.

Under his government, the proportion of coffee that was exported to the German Reich reached 40%. One of his advisers was Max Effinger, the head of the Public Works Office, who immigrated from the German Reich under the Julio Acosta García government and was interned as a German after December 6, 1941. In 1936 a massive prison was built in Liberia under the supervision of Max Effinger.

He intensified relations with the National Socialist German Reich and prevented Jews from fleeing to Costa Rica.
