Life

Longobard settlement area on the middle Danube

Nothing is known about his childhood and youth.

After the death of his father Claffo , Tato came to power around 490. Under his leadership, the Lombards left Rugiland (Lower Austria) and wandered for three years in the area between Theiss and Danube.

Rudolf , the dux (duke) of the Heruli , attacked the Lombards (between 505 and 508), allegedly because Rumetruda had murdered his brother, who had been an envoy to the Lombards. According to another source, the Heruli urged Rudolf to wage war for no reason. Tato sent envoys to the Herulians three times, offering to increase the tribute to ensure peace. When Rudolf fell in battle, the Heruli fled and even gave up their homes, making the Lombards the dominant tribe on the central Danube.

In 510 Tato was murdered by his nephew Wacho. His son Ildichis had to flee to the Gepids and died there in exile.
