Tatu Vanhanen (born April 17, 1929 in Vuoksenranta , Viipuri Province , Finland , now the Russian Federation ; † August 22, 2015 ) was a professor of political science at the University of Tampere in Finland.

Life

During his academic career, Vanhanen focused on researching democratic forms of rule and democratization processes. In this context, he developed the Vanhanen Index to measure a country's degree of democratization.

Vanhanen developed an interest in evolutionary and sociobiological topics relatively late . He is co-author (with Richard Lynn ) of the book IQ and the Wealth of Nations , in which he tries to demonstrate a connection between the IQ of the population of a country and the gross domestic product per capita. The Finnish criminal police ( Keskusrikospoliisi ) examined the initiation of investigations against Vanhanen for alleged inciting or racist statements in an interview with the magazine Kuukausiliite , where he stated: "While the average IQ of the Finns is 97, it is between 60 and 60 in Africa 70. Differences in intelligence are the most significant factor in explaining poverty ". However, she concluded there was no evidence and did not investigate.

Tatu Vanhanen is the father of former Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen .
