Pigeon Tower (West Pitkierie)
The pigeon tower of West Pitkierie is a pigeon tower near the Scottish town of Anstruther in the Council Area Fife . In 1980 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists as an individual monument in the highest monument category A.
history
The pigeon tower dates from the later 18th century. It was on the estate of a mansion called Pitkierie . There are no more traces of this today. There may be a nearby farm on the site of the former manor house.
description
The pigeon tower of West Pitkierie is isolated around two kilometers north of Anstruther. The two-story tower has an octagonal floor plan with concave curved sides. Its masonry is made of quarry stone , some of which is plastered with Harl . In contrast, both the base and the cornices between the two floors are made of natural stone . On the west side an elongated door leads into the interior. Round windows are let into both floors above. There is a cornice with parapet and urns on the edges.
