Divers are drawn to the large variety of corals around Útila that is typical of the Belize Barrier Reef. The water offers very good visibility and pleasant temperatures. Special features are spectacular colored steep walls (mainly off the north-west of the island), small canyons and caves. In the north and northwest are drift dives possible. Large perch relatives (like jacks ), moray eels , turtles and rays are regularly observed. Due to the strong currents rich in plankton , whale sharks are sighted all year round, but with greater frequency between March and April and June to September off the north coast of Utila . The south offers shallower, easy dives.

There are currently twelve diving schools or diving centers located in Utila Town . The diving areas are also visited by liveaboards .
