Basin with Easter water

In the liturgy of the Catholic Church , baptismal water (also known as Easter water ) is holy water , which is mainly used for baptisms and is also distributed from Easter to Pentecost during Asperges at Holy Mass . It is consecrated in a solemn rite on Easter vigil . After the invocation of the All Saints' Litany, the Easter candle is lowered three times into the water while the priest sings the blessing prayer with the request for the descent of the Holy Spirit . Baptismal water and Easter candle are symbolically linked. Both are considered symbols of the new life of the baptized with the risen Christ .

The chorale Vidi aquam is sung to distribute the baptismal water during the Sunday baptismal remembrance during Easter .
