Sunday baptismal memory

Asperges ( the ; Latin aspergere sprinkle ') referred to in the Roman Catholic , Old Catholic and Anglican Church the backing vocals for Sunday Taufgedächtnis where the priests the community as an act of blessing with holy water sprinkled. The recipient of the sacramental crosses himself in memory of his own baptism and as a request for the renewal of the baptismal grace and thus for the forgiveness of sins.

The parish church mass on Sunday began since the Carolingian era with the sprinkling of the church with consecrated water as a cleansing rite, which refers back to the cleansing power of baptismal water. The rite of baptismal remembrance and purification can replace the confession of guilt in the Sunday Holy Mass . During Easter time , instead of the antiphon Asperges me, the Vidi aquam is sung, and then the baptismal water consecrated in the celebration of Easter Vigil is used to sprinkle it . The name Asperges can also stand for the entire rite.

The text of the antiphonal chant from Psalm 51, sung to commemorate baptism, reads:

Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.

“Purify (literally:“ sprinkle ”) me with hyssop, then I will become clean; wash me and I'll be whiter than snow. ( Ps 51,9  EU ) God, be gracious to me according to your graciousness, redeem my iniquities according to your rich mercy ( Ps 51,3  EU ). "

Hyssop is a plant with bushy branches that was used as an aspergillus in ancient Israel . The Asperges alludes to the ritual cleansing of lepers and their homes according to Leviticus ( Lev 14  EU ) by sprinkling them seven times.
