A thousandbone is a nautical knotwork .

Purpose and manufacture

On sailing ships , it is used to prevent sails from becoming ashamed of standing rigging . It is woven from unusable remnants of rope . Pieces about 20 cm long were torn into pieces of cable yarn and woven individually or in pairs between tensioned huesings ( yarns ) with an anchor stitch . The finished millipede is wrapped around the ropes or steel cables at the endangered (chafing) point and fixed.
