Centipede (Bonn)
A 630 m long bridge structure in Bonn is called a millipede , on which the federal motorway 565 between the junctions Bonn- Tannenbusch and Bonn- Endenich runs in four lanes without hard shoulder through the industrial and commercial areas of Weststadt as an elevated road . The structure was opened to traffic in 1959 as part of a new elevated road called the B 9 (sub-town bypass Bonn) between Lengsdorf and the Bonn-Nord junction. In 1971 the route was upgraded to the A 221 motorway, which was given its current number in 1974.
Name and construction
The name millipede, which is of course only used colloquially, comes from the bridge construction, which consists of many individual columns. In the narrower sense, only the northern construction together with the driveway is named that way. The southern bridge has only three massive cross supports. Since the expressway was initially only planned as a federal highway, it has no hard shoulder, but only two lanes in each direction.
The millipede first crosses Lievelingsweg and Brühler Straße in the north . This is followed by the four tracks of the former KBE routes Vorgebirgsbahn and Rheinuferbahn , which are now used by the Stadtbahn . Both routes cross the Rheindorfer Bach in the area of the millipede , with the Rheinuferbahn already on the ramps of the overpass structure to interweave the two routes. After crossing the Lambareneweg , the north head of the Bonn freight station is crossed, where the left-hand Rhine line , the connection to the HGK transfer station Bonn-Bendenfeld and the Voreifelbahn with several industrial connecting tracks meet. The street Am Propsthof runs under the tracks . Immediately south of the tracks is the overpass of the street Am Dickobskreuz .
The name Dransdorfer Weg for the southern bridge arises from the fact that a street of the same name used to run there (in the minus one level), which roughly followed the course of today's Propsthof under the motorway and further on today's Siemensstraße towards Dransdorf. This historical route was implemented in the early days of the railway in the form of a level crossing. The underground railway crossing took place later. The left stretch of the Rhine is thus crossed both under and over by a road at this point, a very rare situation.
Expansion planning
For many years there have been considerations to expand the section of the motorway, which is heavily used with over 100,000 vehicles per day, to six lanes. Two variants emerged from a feasibility study in 2006. If it were to be continued as an elevated road, this would be shortened by the Lievelingsweg / Brühler Straße section, where it would run on a dam and the remaining part would be replaced by a new bridge construction. The other variant provides for the motorway to be lowered 6 to 7 m below the level of the terrain, at which point the millipede would be torn off. The city of Bonn is aiming for implementation between 2010 and 2020. According to the State Office for Road Construction NRW, the end of the useful life is 2022.
From April 2006 to December 2007 the building was extensively renovated. Initially, the construction work should be completed by March 2007, but due to the unexpectedly poor condition and weather-related delays, completion was postponed by nine months. The renovation of the Millipede and the neighboring Dransdorfer Weg bridge totaled around 5 million euros. A further renovation was planned from July 2012, at the same time the prospect of demolition and new construction of the entire bridge due to the condition was given in the medium term. The reinforcement work began on May 13, 2013 and was completed in September 2013.
The period of work on the replacement building has been postponed several times and is Endeicher Ei ” junction will be replaced and expanded to six lanes due to the previous load. The current structure is designed for 70,000 vehicles per day, the new building should cope with around 115,000 vehicles per day. As of 2019, the A 565 is being used by 93,000 vehicles / day in this section; the forecast is for around 102,000 vehicles / day in 2030. A citizens' initiative is calling for a cycle path to be built instead of additional car lanes on the new millipede.
