Tawan Tolgoi ( Mongolian Таван толгой , in German "five hills") is a deposit of high-quality, near-surface hard coal in the district ( Sum ) Tsogttsetsii of the Ömnö-Gobi-Aimags (province of South Gobi) in southern Mongolia . The population of this settlement consisting of company camps is 313 (December 31, 2009), while in 2009 there were 2,642 people in the entire district. The mining projects in the region will increase the population in Tsogttsetsii to 37,500 by 2020, according to estimates by the Mongolian Ministry of Construction and Urban Development.

location

Tawan Tolgoi is located in the south of the Gobi desert , 15 kilometers southwest of the center of the (Sum) Tsogttsetsii district and 98 kilometers east of Dalandsadgad , the capital of the Ömnö-Gobi aimag. The deposit has an area of approximately 30 × 40 km.

economy

The opening of the open pit began in 1967. Coal production was 38.5 million tons in 2003, 64.2 million tons in 2004, 2005 - 404.6 million tons in 2005 and 787.1 million tons in 2006. Regarding the overall extent, it is however, Tawan Tolgoi is just beginning. While the Chinese are mining a smaller part, the state-owned company "Tawan Tolgoi AG" owned more than 70% of the deposits. A share of 10% of the deposits is in the hands of the company "Energy Resources", which is driving the development with the latest technology as part of the UHG (Ukhaa Khudag) project. The main customer in all three parts of Tawan Tolgoi is China.

In 2008 the government decided to distribute 20 percent of the shares to the population. Since then, every Mongol has owned 1072 shares in the mine . In 2012 that was equivalent to a million Tugrik (around 600 euros). An international IPO failed. In May 2012, the government allowed the shares to be sold back to the state.

traffic

While coal has so far been transported by truck on a desert road to the Chinese border, the construction of a 268 km long railway connection from Ukhaa Khudag (UHG) to the Mongolian border town of Gashuun Sukhait and an extension to Linhe on the Chinese side is with project planning assistance from DB-International planned. The single-track line, intended for an axle load of 25 tons, was originally supposed to go into operation in 2015. In March 2016, however, a permit to build the line was only reported. According to a report from November 2017, Mongolia had built more than 200 km of foundations for the route, but the project was interrupted due to a lack of funding.

At the beginning of 2009, the Chinese mining company Shenhua Energy, which had offered the Mongolian government its support in the development of Tawan Tolgoi, began building a 354 km rail link from Baotou to the Chinese border town of Ganqimaodu, across from the Mongolian Gashuun Sukhait. 60 million tons of ore containing copper and gold should be able to be transported to China annually. In January 2017, 688,000 tons of coal were transported over this connection, an increase of 289% compared to the previous year.

The redesign of the sand tracks was planned as early as 2010, initially in the form of gravel roads and later with asphalt roads.

Self-immolation of a union leader

At a press conference in Mongolia on November 13, 2015, there was a dramatic protest: the union leader of the Erdenes Tawan Tolgoi company said: “The government no longer supports our company, the families of the workers are being forced to starve , that's why I will burn myself to death for the people of Mongolia and our children. ”He poured gasoline over himself and set himself on fire. Mongolia planned to sell shares in 10 state-owned companies, including part of the Tawan Tolgoi project.
