Tayama Katai ( Japanese 田 山 花 袋 ; born January 22, 1872 in Tatebayashi , Tochigi Prefecture (today: Gunma Prefecture ); † May 13, 1930 ; actually: 田 山 録 弥 Tayama Rokuya ) was a Japanese writer . His most famous works are teachers in the country ( 田 舎 教師 , Inaka Kyōshi ) and futon ( 蒲 団 ). He is known for works of naturalism . Much of his work is autobiographical.

Life

Tayama Katai's father was killed in the Satsuma rebellion .

In 1890 he met Yanagita Kunio , and so was Ozaki Kōyō's student. Ozaki put him in turn to Emi Suiin . He published his first work Uribatake ( 瓜 畑 ) and called himself Katai from then on . In 1896 he met Kunikida Doppo and Shimazaki Tōson know.

In 1904 he took part in the Russo-Japanese War . After the war he turned to Japanese naturalism. His breakthrough came with the Futon work . Together with Shimazaki Tōson, he is one of the most important representatives of Japanese naturalism.
