Taylor Island is an island in the Spencer Gulf off the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula in southern Australia in the state of South Australia . The island's name comes from a lost crew member on an HMS Investigator expedition under the command of Matthew Flinders . The namesake William Taylor was a midshipman on that expedition and died on February 21, 1802. On February 23, Matthew Flinders named Taylor Island. He named the archipelago with two neighboring islands Taylor's Isles in his memory .

Surroundings

Taylor Island is 1.6 miles east of the coast of the Eyre Peninsula, which is protected here as Lincoln National Park. Grindal Island is located 2.3 kilometers south-southeast.

The Taylor's Isles also include two other islands: In the north, Taylor Island is connected to the smaller island of Owen Island , 460 meters away, by a sandbank below sea level . About 100 meters south of Taylor Island is another small island without a name.

Flora and fauna

Mallee eucalyptus is found on Taylor Island , as is common on the south coast of Australia and in Lincoln National Park. In addition, there is Zygophyllum apiculatum on the island.

The Australian marsupials Kusus , as well as gray-coated spectacled birds and Rosenberg monitor lizards have been detected on the island.

Residents and buildings

Taylor Island is privately owned. The owner has a sheep farm on the island and sells wool .

A nine-meter-high lighthouse has stood on the highest point on the island since 1982 .
