The Te Puna Roimata peak is approximately 890 m high mountain on the Antarctic Ross Island . It rises 2.5 km west of the Terra Nova Glacier and 3 km south of Lewis Bay on the lower northeast slope of Mount Erebus .
A McDonnell Douglas DC-10 crashed on November 28, 1979 on Air New Zealand Flight 901 not far from this mountain. In this accident, which has been commemorated by a plaque west of this mountain since 1987, 237 passengers from eight nations and 20 crew members were killed. The naming took the New Zealand Geographic Board made the naming in 2000. The Maori "Te Puna Roimata" translated means "source of tears".
