Map of Ross Island with Lewis Bay (above) |
The Lewis Bay is a large bay on the north coast of the Antarctic Ross Island . It lies between Mount Bird and Cape Tennyson .
Participants in the Discovery Investigations (1901–1904), led by British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott, mapped them. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1964 after Captain Price Lewis Jr. (1920-1999) of the United States Navy , commandant of the USS Staten Island during Operation Deep Freeze in 1959, who also campaigned for this series over the years 1963 and 1964, served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the US Navy Support Units in Antarctica .
