Teatro Académico Gil Vicente

The Teatro Académico Gil Vicente (TAGV) is a theater in the Portuguese university city of Coimbra .

history

It was built from 1956 to 1961, according to plans by the architects Alberto José Pessoa and João Abel Manta . In 1961 it opened as the Teatro Gil Vicente . In 1993 it was reopened after renovation work and was given its current name in 1994. The TAGV has belonged to it since the foundation of the University of Coimbra's cultural foundation , the Fundação Cultural da Universidade de Coimbra , in 2007.

It was named after Gil Vicente (1465–1536), the founder of the Portuguese theater.

Program and space

Centrally located on Praça da República , some lines of the Coimbra trolleybus stop right in front of the entrance . The TAGV is one of the most important cultural centers in the city. Its offerings include theater and dance performances, concerts and film screenings. The only film festival in the country dedicated exclusively to Portuguese film , the Caminhos do Cinema Português, takes place here every year . The house also maintains international collaborations, both in theater projects and its other activities, also abroad. An international jazz festival is also held here.

In addition to its main hall, the Auditório with 773 seats, the TAGV also has a studio, the Café Teatro with 100 seats, which can be expanded to 300 seats with the foyer and entrance area. There is also a restaurant with an outdoor terrace and an exhibition room.
