The Teatro Verdi is the opera house of the Italian city of Salerno , built from 1863 and inaugurated in 1872 .

Construction and architecture

The construction project was launched immediately after the establishment of Italian unity by Matteo Luciani, the city's first mayor. The architectural design was based on that of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, but the house is considerably smaller. The stage curtain depicting the escape of the Saracens from Salerno in 871 was made by Domenico Morelli and is sometimes referred to as the “most beautiful existing in Italy”.

The inauguration took place in 1872 with Rigoletto . The name Verdi was only given to the theater after his death in 1901.

Today the theater has a capacity of 610 seats.
