The Techirghiol stickleback ( Gasterosteus crenobiontus ) is an extinct species of fish from the stickleback family . Its area of distribution was freshwater springs near Lake Techirghiol on the Romanian side of the Black Sea . The taxon was originally considered a subspecies of the three-spined stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ).

features

The Techirghiol stickleback reached a standard length of 65 millimeters. There were 13 to 17 bone plates on the body and tail stalk. The bone plates were missing above the base of the anal fin. The rear edge of the bone plates was smooth. On the tail stalk the bone plates formed a lateral keel.

Way of life

The spawning season was between February and October. More is not known about the way of life.

die out

The Techirghiol stickleback was last detected in the 1960s. Despite intensive searches, most recently in 1998, the taxon was not found again. Hybridization with the three-spined stickleback is assumed to be a possible cause of extinction . The Techirghiol stickleback and the three-spined stickleback were originally separated by Lake Techirghiol. After irrigation measures in the 1960s, the formerly extremely salty Techirghiol lake was converted into a brackish lake through which the three-spined sticklebacks were able to penetrate into the range of the Techirghiol stickleback.
