Ted "Kid" Lewis (born October 28, 1894 in London , † October 20, 1970 there ; born Gershon Mendeloff ) was an English boxer .

The Jew Lewis made his professional debut in 1909 and boxed almost exclusively in London until 1914. After winning the English championship at the age of 18 and the European featherweight championship at 19, he moved to Australia and the USA in 1914.

Here he boxed in the upper classes, light and welterweight classes and met his long-time rival Jack Britton for the first time , against whom he should compete no less than twenty times in the course of his career. So he won the world welterweight title against him in 1915 .

Among other things, he defeated the lightweight star Benny Leonard in 1918 , won and lost the world title several times. In 1919 he had to finally give up the title, an attempt to win the middleweight world title failed. He then returned to England to secure the European Middleweight Championship title in 1920.

In February 1921 he fought for the last time against Britton for the welterweight championship, but lost on points. In 1922 he failed in a fight for the light heavyweight world title at Georges Carpentier by knockout in the first round. Two years later he also lost his European welterweight title and finally ended his career in 1929.

Lewis is considered the first known boxer to use a face mask in the ring.

After his career he worked for Oswald Mosley without knowing that this was an anti-Semite (see link).
